One Day Monsoon Trek to Kohoj Fort on 07 July ‘ 2013.

Hi Mates, We at Trek Mates India glad to invite you for One Day Monsoon Trek to Kohoj Fort on 07 July ‘ 2013.

Little info about the event :
Height: 3200 Ft (Approx)
Difficulty Level: Easy
Endurance Level: Medium
Region: Palghar
Base Village: Waghote
Trek Leader: Vishal Khond (8291139993 / 9322069953)

Kohoj: The route of this trek is 70% shadowed with dense forest, a big lake at the base and few water sources on the way and many water tanks on the top makes it a pleasant trek & also famous for Human pinnacles.

Sightseeing:
Heart-Shaped Lake, Bastions, Cisterns, Temples and above all Man-Shaped Pinnacle
This fort has not got very historical importance but looking at the well-dug cisterns, the fort can be said to be belonging to Bhoj-period. But no such evidences are available. What is known about this fort is that Kohoj was under Portuguese colonies in 16th century. They fortified it and later Peshwas conquered this fort in 1737.
The moderate hike to the top is a fresh experience. The 2.5 to 3 hours one way hike to Kohoj fort has all ingredients for a pleasant small eco-adventure landscapes reflecting in small lakes, hills, plateaus, misty atmosphere, flora and fauna (wild and domestic), the two very peculiarly shaped pinnacles are the guiding lighthouse to the fort of Kohoj. The view from the top is mind blowing.

Naneghat Pass - This sheer cliff is a well know landmark, very clearly visible from Konkan region as you pass on your way from Kalyan towards Malshej. The walls of this pass jut out from the main range and hence command a magnificent view of the great bend in the Sahyadri. This is a pass, which once in history, enjoyed prime importance. The inscriptions, the steps, the rock-cut rest houses, and the cisterns all point out the historic fact that this route was frequently used as far back as the 1st century B.C. The Naneghat area and the caves are now very popular due to an easy access from Malshejghat road.

Serving as a trade route for the transport between markets of Kalyan, Nalasopara (Konkan) and Junnar (Plateau) since the times of  Satvahanas, this pass today offers you one of the most enjoyable treks in the vicinity of Mumbai
NaneGhat is situated at about 55 Km from Kalyan. One can reach the base village Vaishakare by boarding the state transport bus passing through MalshejGhat. From Vaishakare it's about 1/2 a hour walk along the road to MalshejGhat to reach the divergence for NaneGhat. TMI : Monsoon Trek to Ratangad on 7th July Sunday 2013.

Hello Friends, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for a Monsoon Trek to Ratangad on 7th July, Sunday 2013.

Some information about the place:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Endurance Level: Medium
Height: apprx. 4255 ft.
Base Village: Ratanwadi

Trek Leader : Manoj Kalwar
(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and is located about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range surrounded by great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake of Ahmednagar district. With views of lake and highest mountains in Sahyadris looks very much lost in time.

(Pics has been sourced from the internet)

At the base of this fort is ancient Lord Shiva (Amurteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old temple of Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi, is an absolute paragon of high class architecture of our ancestors.

Ratangad has still the remains of fort with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accomodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side on can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. This side has also some fortification left, but most of it is damaged. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via tryambak Darwaza.

Little Info About The Event :

Bhimashankar

Grade: Medium (5. hrs trek)
Base Village: Khandas / Kathewadi

Bhimashankar : is one of the 12 Jyotirlings of India, a pilgrimage place approximately 3500 feet high up in the hills. The area around Bhimashankar is covered with thick dense jungle. The Maharashtra Government has also declared it a Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is small (only about 100 sq. km’s), but it is home to a wide variety of animals Leopard, Sambar, Barking deer, Porcupines, Grey Junglefowls, Wild pig, Hanuman langur, Rhesus macaque and Flying Squirrel etc. The sanctuary is famous as the home of a highly endangered subspecies of the Indian Giant Squirrel – Shekharu (Ratufaindicaelphistoni), which is also the state animal of Maharashtra.

Shiva Temple: The temple of Bhimashankar is around 1200 – 1400 years old and is built on the HemadPanthi style. There are very beautiful sculptures and paintings on the roof and pillars of the temple. At the front of the temple hangs a huge metal bell cast in 1729. There is also a 15-20 feet high “Deepmala” or lamppost in the outer corridor of the temple. There is also an inscription on stone on this lamppost. It is to be noted that the original name of the river Chandrabhaga at Pandharpur is Bhima. This Bhima River originates at Bhimashankar.

GuptBhimashankar : There is a water stream route going down from the left of the Ram temple. Taking that route, we enter a thick jungle. We reach a temple around 25 minutes through this route. A route going toward the waterfall, left of this temple, leads to the “water sculpted” “Shiva Linga” under this waterfall. This is called the GuptBhimashankar. There is a huge waterfall at this place.

Nagphani : We reach a pond when we climb towards Bhimashankar from the Ghat. The route going towards the right, from this pond, takes us to the Hanuman temple. The route going up through this route leads to the Nagphani. We can have a view of the forts of Peth and Padhar and the plateaus of Peth and Matheran.
