TMI: Premium trek to Korlai Fort and Nagaon Beach on 11th May '14.

Hi Mates, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite you for a One Day Premium Trek to Korlai fort and Nagaon Beach , Near Alibaug on 11th May '14

Little Info About The Trek
TypeHill Fort

Height: 2828 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Easy
District: Raigad

Base Village: Korlai

Korlai Fort (also called Morro or Castle Curlew) is a Portuguese fortification in the town of Korlai, Maharashtra, India. It was built on an island (Morro de Chaul) which guards the way to the Revdanda Creek. It was meant as a companion to the fort at Chaul. At this strategic position the Portuguese could use it to defend their province which stretched from Korlai to Bassein. Vestiges of the Portuguese occupation are manifested in the distinct dialect of the Korlai villages inhabitants which is a Portuguese Creole called Kristi

This fort was built in 1521 by the Portuguese with the permission of the Ahmednagar sultanate. In 1521, taking advantage of the confusion in the aftermath of the death of the Burhan Nizam the Portuguese tried to take over the fort. However the sultan retaliated and sent some of his best men to reclaim the fort. Subsequently a truce was reached in which the Ahmednagar sultanate occupied the island and no further fortification of the island took place. Only a wooden cross remained on the island as a sign of its former rulers.
However in 1594, Abranches, a Portuguese captain with 1,500 soldiers and 1,500 natives took possession of the fort. The besieged soldiers of the Sultanate tried to block their way by putting a dead elephant at the main gate and a dead horse at the inner gate. But in the end they had to surrender. The Portuguese won the fort but not having enough men to stand guard there chose to destroy it leaving only the central tower and a battery intact.
Before its destruction, Korlai had been described by travelers as a "magnificent fortress as strong as any other in the world". On the inland side - the only place where it was susceptible to be attacked it was protected by a ditch and could only be accessed by a drawbridge. The main entrance was guarded by a bronze lion and the highest tower by a bronze eagle. It housed 7,000 horses and as much men.
Some parts of it were rebuilt later but now had a garrison of only 50 men.The church within the fort was used for worship on Sundays and holidays. Korlai fort was also strategically very important as it guarded the mouth of the bay. Sambhaji the son of Shivaji tried to take it over but failed and had to withdraw his forces on 6 December 1687.The fort was taken by the Marathas who held it from 1739-1818.

TMI: Premium Trek to Ramshej Fort, and visit to Sula Vineyards, Nashik on 4th May '14.

Hi Mates , We at Trek Mates India gladly invite you for Premium Trek to Ramshej Fort, and a visit to Sula Vineyards, Nashik on 4th May 2014 , Leaving on 3rd May, Night.

Some information about the event
Ramshej Fort
Type : Hill forts
Height : 3273 ft
Fort Range : Trimbakeshwar
District : Nashik
Grade : Easy (Max 1.5 hours Ascend)

On the western tip of the beautiful Ramshej Ghat in Northern Nasik, lies the marvelous Ramshej fort. Ramshej is about 14km from Nasik, while travelling to Peth and from there it is a short trek to the fort. The fort is located at a height of 3273ft, which shows you the marvel of labor and effort that went into making it.
The best time to visit the Ramshej Fort is when there is a short dry spell during the monsoons. This helps because when it rains, the hillside suddenly bursts into greenery and during those short drying spells in the monsoons, the soil is firm enough to climb and does not muck your shoes.

History has it, that the fort was attacked by Aurangzeb’s army, and his commanders threatened the Maratha kingdom saying that they would capture the fort in hours but Shivaji Maharaj’s son Sambhaji resisted these attacks for 7 years. The Fort thus remained with the Marathas for a period that was longer than the fighting lives of some of the commanders of Aurangazeb’s army who made the claim that the fort would be taken down in hours.

TMI : Twin Treks to Sea Fort Khanderi and Underi on 4th May 2014, Sunday

We at Trek Mates India invite you to Twin Treks to Khanderi and Underi island sea forts near Alibaug on 4th May 2014, Sunday.

Some information about the trek:

Fort : Khanderi and Underi
Type : Island Sea Forts
District : Alibaug
Level : Easy

The Island Sea forts of Khanderi and Underi are located three kms. in the sea near Thal. The two early notices of Khanderi in 1538 of the Portuguese Viceroy Dorn Joao da Castro and 1674 of John Fryer, refer to it as uninhabited island.

In August 1679, Shivaji occupied the islands ant oversaw the construction of a fortification, wall. The British attempted to claim the islands 'for the Crown' and oust Shivaji failed miserably and this was followed by Janjira Siddi to unseat the Marathas but followed suit. All attempts by the British and the Siddi to capture Khanderi - Underi, forts did not fructify till 1750, but finally it was ceded to the British in 1818 "as part of the Peshwa territory". And currently the Khanderi Fort is under Bombay Port trust administration.Permission of the Bombay port trust is necessary to visit the fort by mans of o boat.
In 1687, Light House on the Island was built by the British which still stands. Even today, there is a temple Of Vetal and the Tomb of Daud Pir both of which are worshipped by the local fishermen community.

Khanderi is a fortified island 20 km off the coast of Mumbai. This along with its sister fort Underi formed the major fortification along the Mumbai coast. This was built by Shivaji in 1660 to keep a check on the Siddis at Murud-Janjira fort. However later on it lost its importance. Most of the fort is still intact the most prominent structure is a lighthouse built in 1837. It can only be accessed with the permission of the Bombay Port Trust.

Underi (also called Jaidurg) is a fortified island near the mouth of Mumbai harbour south of Prong's Lighthouse. It is a companion fort to Khanderi and currently lies in Raigad district, Maharashtra. These islands of Khanderi and Underi served as one of the landmarks for ships entering Mumbai harbour. Underi is smaller than Khanderi and nearly circular. It was built by Kahim of the Siddis in 1680.
