Konkankada Rappelling With Trek Mates in Feb - March '10.

Hey Mates, Trek Mates with collaboration with Shalom Adventures presents to you one of the most adventurous event in Sahyadris: The konkanKada centre rappelling 1800 ft.

Some details about the event:
Place: Harishchandragad (height: 4500 ft)
Type: Hill forts
Rappelling Height: 1800ft (4 stages)

Some details about Harishchandragad and Konkan kada:
Harishchandragad is a hill fort in the Ahmednagar region of India . Its history is linked with that of Malshej Ghat, and it has played a major role in guarding the surrounding region. The height of the fort is 4671 ft MSL. The most interesting point on this fort is this cliff, which has always fascinated many people from many years. The cliff faces west and looks down upon the Konkan. From here, one can have a breathtaking view of the surrounding region and the setting sun. This cliff is not just vertical, but it is an overhang, almost like a cobra's hood.

The Konkan Kada, a unique formation in the Sahyadri, is really tough and a challenge for the trekkers. This is a semicircular cliff of about 2,000 ft straight drop + 1000 ft slant fall in the Konkan plains. The surrounding grandeur and beauty of the plains and the mountains leaves us totally spellbound.

Rappelling, also known as abseiling is an act of descending a mountain face by sliding down a rope, which is attached to a body harness and fastened to an overhead projection, with sufficient friction provided as to make the speed of the descend controllable.
To rappel the Konkan Kada atleast once in a life time is a dream of almost every adventure freak in Sahyadri. It is the most thrilling and spellbound activity in the whole Sahyadri.

Trek Mates: Tour to Ratnagiri on 19th - 21st Feb '10

Hi Mates, We at Trek Mates are happy to invite you for a Three day Ratnagiri tour on 19th to 21st Feb '10(starting on 18th night).

Some details of the tour:

Places that we will be visiting:
1. Marleshwar Mandir and waterfall
2. Ratnadurg
3. Ratnagiri palace
4. Purnagad
5. Pavas
6. Ganpatipule
7. Jaigad
8. Velneshwar
9. Gopalgad
10. Harnai Beach
11. Suvarnadurg
12. Goa Fort
13. Fattehgad

Places we will try to cover (if time Permits):
1. Guhaghar
2. Marine fish aquarium in Ratnagiri

Marleshwar Temple: Tourists should visit this important temple in Sangmeshwar for devotion and natural beauty. We can see Sahyadri's huge precipice and river. We get a surprise when we reach Marleshwar in the pleasant atmosphere. At the right side we get the entrance of the cave and near the entrance of the cave, there is 'Kund' of cold water. When we enter the cave we can see Shri. Marleshwar. Friendly snakes and cobras are everywhere in the cave but noteworthy thing is not a single person has died because of snakes here.

If we go ahead, 'Dhareshwar' waterfall can be seen. The waterfall sight is very beautiful from the cave but we don't get an idea about the height of the waterfall from here. We will have to go beyond 'Karambeli Doh' for that.

Ratnadurg: Besieged by the charming Arabian Sea on the three sides, the massive Ratnadurga Fort presents a splendid look. A massive structure in the shape of a horseshoe, with a length of 1,300 meters and a width of 1,000 meters, Ratnadurg Fort was once a strong hold of the Maratha Empire.
Spread over a vast area of 120 acres, Ratnadurg Fort was under the Muslim rule for so many years. Now a collapsed structure, lying across two hills, Ratnadurg Fort gives a decrepit look.
Overlooking the Arabian Sea, Ratnadurg Fort offers the dazzling view of the sun going down the sea and the sweet sound of the pounding of the waves against the rocks makes a perfect symphony. Another specific attraction in the fort is the marvelous lighthouse situated in the bastions of the fort.
Once in the fame of glory, Ratnadurg Fort on the coastal line of the Konkan region is a perfect place to getaway from the trappings of the city life.

Ratnagiri palace: One of the major attractions of Ratnagiri city situated on a small hillock. There is also a best sunset point from here. One can have a panoramic view of Someshwar creek, Bhatye bridge to pawas and Arabian sea. This palace was used for keeping the King Thibaw, last king of Burma (now Myanmar) under house arrest. Thibaw ruled the Burma for 6 years.

Purnagad:

Purnagad fort is situated on a mountain which is at the origin of Muchakundi creek. This fort is having a small area but the bastions are having a very strong construction. One can view the entire fort premises in a sight.

Pawas :

Pawas, a village with captivating natural beauty. This is a prime spiritual place in Ratnagiri district due to a very long stay of Swami (saint) Swaroopanand. Swami Swaroopanand was a follower of Warkari Sampraday ( Tradition).

Ganpatipule: Nestled in the greenery is a nearly 4000 year old landmark the Swayambhu Ganpati Temple (Swayambhu means a self-originated idol, Ganapati). It is flooded by thousands of devotees and tourists every year. Ganpatipule, the Lord of the 'ganas' or army and "pule" means sand dunes. It is one of the 'Ashta Ganapatis' (eight Ganpatis) of India and is known as 'Paschim Dwar Dewata' (Western Sentinel God).

Jaigad: Jaigad is sea fort that is located at the tip of a peninsula in Ratnagiri District, in the state of Maharashtra, India. Nestled on a cliff, it overlooks a bay formed where the Shastri river enters the Arabian Sea. [1] It has a commanding view of the bay and the open sea. A jetty port, and a lighthouse is located nearby. Although in ruins, most of the fort's outer wall and ramparts still stand. A deep moat surrounds the fort side not facing the cliff edge.

Velneshwar: Velneshwar is about 170 km from Ratnagiri, in Maharashtra, India. It's a sleepy, quiet village with a nice, clean and beautiful beach lined with coconut trees.
It is possible to swim there as the beach is free from rocks. There is an old Shiva temple near Velneshwar which is frequently visited by pilgrims; a haven for those in search of quiet mysticism in the ethereal presence of the master mystic - Lord Shiva.
This place is the root of the Gokhale, Gadgil, Govande, Savarkar,Velankar family and their deity. It is known that all Gokhale in the world originated from this place.

Gopalgad: The fort gopalgad is assumed to be built by Siddis during the beginning period of 16th century. Shivaji Maharaj later captured the fort in 1660. An adventurous trek for about a mile through the hilly trails will lead the visitor to the top of the ruined fort.
The hill breasts two small but attractive temples and a lighthouse at the top. One can get the stunning view of the nearby places from the lighthouse premises. This place offers all the exquisite beauty of the nature and is a challenging place for enthusiastic trekkers.

Harnai: A very quiet beach, highly attractive for meditation, Harnai beach is renowned as the gateway romantic beach in Harnai. The inflows of the tourists are growing multitudes year by year in this unspoiled beauty of nature. This beach is famed for its clean softy shores and safe waters for fun filled activities as well as for swimming. The palm trees lined up adds a scenic natural greenish background for the calm beach. It is really an experience spending few hours to few days in the cool ambience of beach. This is a weekend destination to many of the Mumbai and Pune populace to escape from the busy city life.

Suvarnadurg: is a fort that is located on a small island in the Arabian Sea, near Harnai in Konkan, along the West Coast of India, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. The fort also includes another land fort (small) called the Kanakadurga at the base of headland of Harnai port on the coast. Building of the fort is credited to Sultan Adilshah of Bijapur. The forts were captured by Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire, in 1660. Subsequently, Shivaji, other Peshwas and the Angres further fortified the forts for defence purposes.
