TMI : Range Trek to Rohida – Raireshwar & Kenjalgad with Trek Mates India.

Hi friends, We, Trek Mates India, have arranged a ranged trek to Rohida-Raireshwar & Kenjalgad on 2nd Oct 2010; starting on 1st night.

Places that we will be visiting

Rohida
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 3650 ft (above MSL)
Grade: Easy
Base Village: Bajarwadi (near Bhor)

Rohida or Vichitragad is a fort situated about 15 Km from Bhor village. It is one of the southmost forts in Pune district. Rohida is barren in Summer or Winter but With monsoon it is filled with lush green grass.

Points of attraction are old temple, few big water tanks, Chor darvaja, Buruj (bastion) on North East Face, Chuna grinding wheel.

This fort is also called as WICHITRA GAD or BINICHA KILLA or ROHIDA. IT is related with SATWAHAN ERA.

We will also be visiting the Hanging Bridge , Nageshwar temple and the monument of 'Shri Shankaraji Narayan Sachiv' on the way to Raireshwar

Raireshwar
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 4589 ft (above MSL)
Grade: Easy
Base Village: Korle

Raireshwar is a place in Bhor Taluka which has a temple famous for its historical importance. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj took the oath of Swaraj in this temple at the age of 16 and then created history. Thus , Raireshwar can be considered as an important place in Maratha history.

The temple is very old and of stone structure. But it was later re-constructed in 18thcentury. It is situated in between various hills and forts. Especially , Kenjalgad or Mohangad looks beautiful from the temple place. The temple is on platue, which is full of smythial flowers in monsoon. It really looks beautiful. “The hilly region and numerous other flowers on the platue add spice to the beauty.”

Waghjai temple, Aswalkhind and Kenjalgadh are the other place that can be enjoyed Raireshwar.

Kenjal Gad
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 4273 ft (above MSL)
Grade: Easy
Base Village: Korle

Kenjalgad or Ghera Khelanja Fort, is situated on the Mandhardev spur of the Mahadev range eleven miles north-west of Wai. The only entrance is on the north side up a set of a hundred steps running parallel to the line of the scarp till within four or seven feet of the top, when they turn at right angles to it and cut straight into a passage leading on to the top.

The steps are peculiarly imposing and differ from any others in the district. At the foot of the steps is a bastion which evidently flanked a gateway. There are remains of six large and three small buildings, all modern. The head-quarters or kacheri is only marked by a large fig tree. The fort has three large water tanks about forty feet square and six small ones for storage of water and grain. But there is no living spring inside the fort. The largest tank is in the southern face and is quite thirty feet deep. There is a narrow promenade on the ridge at the foot of the scarp and on the north side is a large cave with excellent water and partly used for storage purposes. Khelanja fort is said to have been built by the Bhoj Rajas of Panhala who flourished in the twelfth century.

Added Attractiions of the trek

TMI- Pune: Trek to Ratangad on 26th Sept 2010.

Hello Friends,

We at Trek Mates India-Pune are glad to invite You for a one day trek to Ratangad on 26th Sept 2010, (Starting on 25th night).

Some information about the fort:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Height: apprx. 4255 ft.
Appx. time to reach the top: 3 hrs from the base village
Base Village: Ratanwadi

Ratan means Jewel in Hindi. This hill fort is indeed jewel in all the hill forts here in Sahyadri. It is located in the district of Ahmednagar and is located about 4255 feet above sea level. It lies in the Ajoba mountain range surrounded by great mountains of Kulang, Alang, Kalsubai, Katarabai, Ajoba and Ghanchakkar. Geographically Ratangad is at the banks of Bhandardara lake of Ahmednagar district. With views of lake and highest mountains in Sahyadris looks very much lost in time.

At the base of this fort is ancient Lord Shiva (Amurteshwar) temple. About 1000 years old temple of Lord Shiva, the Amruteshwar Temple at Ratanwadi, is an absolute paragon of high class architecture of our ancestors.

Ratangad has still the remains of fortress with bastions and stone walls. Cave on the top is cut from the rock face and can easily accomodate 25 people at a time. Water cisterns are usually filled with water throughout the year and trekkers use them as water source. Eastern side of the fort has some fortification left, one can see Rani mahal here. From the southern side on can see Katrabai and Ajoba fort very close. This side has also some fortification left, but most of it is damaged. Climbing up on the northern side, one can see natural orifice (hole in rock, locally called nedhe) in the rock face, mostly made by wind. This orifice is big enough to be seen from base of the fort and can accommodate about 6-7 people at a time. Strong winds can be experienced at this orifice. Climbing down the nedhe to the western end of the fort leads closest to the Khuta pinnacle via tryambak Darwaza.

TMI Trip to Kaas Plateau on 19th Sept '10.

Hi friends, Trek Mates India, invite you all to a trip to Valley of flowers of Maharashtra : Kaas Plateau on 19th Sept 2010 (Starting on 18th night)

Whats so special about the this Trip:

People who are keen about nature, flora and fauna this is the place for you.

Maharashtra’s Valley of flowers: Tha kaas Plateau where hundreds of varieties of wild flowers of all colours bloom in August – September every year; is situated approx. 25 kms from Satara city.

The lateritic plateau of Kass has becomes home to millions of tiny flowers in late monsoons. The whole spectacle is beyond words.

More than 300 varieties of wild flowers, herbs, orchids, shrubs, insectivorous plants etc. can be seen here in Aug and Sep (Best time is 30th Aug to 30th Sep)

This plateau overlooks the lush evergreen forests that serves as a water catchment area of Koyna Dam and which is recently declared as “Sahyadri Tiger reserve”

In monsoon the whole area transforms into an unbelievable carpets of flowers like yellow carpets of Smithia and Sonki flowers, Pink carpets of Balsam, Purple carpets of Karvi etc….

It is a dream destination not only for avid botanists but also for those who appreciate nature. These carpets change colors almost every week depending on the dominant flowers during that time.

Kass plateau and the surrounding area has a very good birdlife with good sightings of Crested Buntings, Malabar Crested Larks, Oriental White-eyes, Bonelli’s Eagle.
It is a heaven for Macro photography too.

Places we might be visiting (as time permits)
Sajjangad Fort:
Type: Hill Fort
Height: 3350 Feet above MSL (Approx)
Grade: Easy
District: Satara
Range: Satara
Base Village: Gajwadi

Sajjangad meaning Fort of Good People, is located near the city of Satara, India. It is the final resting place of Sant Ramdas, a saint and social reformer in 16th century India. His teachings and works are read and followed by many people even today in the state of Maharashtra and Sajjangad is a popular place of pilgrimage.Previously known as Parali, it was renamed to Sajjangad after Shivaji Maharaj donated it to Sant Ramdas to set up his permanent monastery.

Thoseghar Waterfalls

Thoseghar is very famous for it's high Waterfalls .. These Waterfalls are very attractive and creates a loud noise in the calm nature. These waterfalls are also accompanied by a clean lake, dark woods and highly hilly region. This fall is approximately 100 m high.

Pateshwar Hills

Pateshwar alias Patheshwar aka Surya Patheshwar is one such place near Satara where one can find copious archaic sculptures.
Pateshwar Hill is wrapped in a green thick blanket of trees. The jungle is of semi-deciduous type with teak, banyan, Jajmun, Karvee and other tree varieties. With lyrical notes of an Indian Robin or Whistling Barbet, one can find serene environ with cool feeling.
At the beginning of steps, is a Lord Ganesha idol with Ridhi-Sidhi, his wives.

Further up the hill are two different Lord Shiva temples and an Ahsram, recently built by Swami Govindanand, one local saint. In the closet vicinity of the first Hemadpanti Shiva Temple, are many pieces of statuettes surrounding it and the sidewall of the temple consists of cave-like openings on the either sides of entrance. One of such never-seen-before engrave has a huge Shivalinga and the other consists of a Hanuman idol. The premises also comprise of two big Deepmalas.

Once you enter the main temple, you find superbly carved Nandi statue in front of the Shivlinga. There is a miniature figurine which gives a view of wedding scene of Lord Shiva and Parvati. On the either sides of main temple there are small temples where you find iconic idols of Kartikeya and another Nandi with a human face. The 18-armed Goddess Mahishasur Mardidni carving is in similar context with that of Kalikamata of Kolkata. In the temple itself, there are sculptures of Lord Vishnu sitting on the snake and both in horizontal position. On the eastern part of the hill there are stone-carved cave-like structures, filled with water. These all three cave-lets are again with Shivlingas of various sizes and some unknown kind of god statues. There is one stone-constructed water tank called Hatti Talab around these cave like temples. Further up the hill there is a temple as if it has been emerged out of soil. This three-sectioned temple begins with a Deepmala, followed by a Nandi. This whole temple is at sub-ground level hence lot of water logging has been seen. The either sides of this temple too consist of cave-like structures and numerous Shivlingas in different forms and the number of Salunki range from three to 100. In the main temple thre is a Maha Shiva Linga carved with minute necklace-like linings on it. These are nothing but 551 small Pindis carved on the main Pindi. All the walls are carved with such minute Pindis and the total number of such Pindis is not less than 1,008. The main Pindia dipped in water has exclusivity of the kind and there are number of carvings on the monolithic poles of the temple that you are left spell bound. One snake-like carving, sculptures of the eight Avatars of Lord Vishnu and even you will notice linguistic carvings in Modi script on one of the poles.

TMI Trek to Ratangad on 18th September '11.

Hello Friends, We at Trek Mates India are glad to invite You for a One day Trek to Ratangad on 18th Sept 2011, (Starting on 17th , Saturday Night).

Some information about the place:
Type: Hill Fort
Grade: Medium
Endurance Level: Medium
Height: apprx. 4255 ft.

Ratangad has still the remains of fort with bastions and stone walls.
